When bookkeeping alone is not enough
Your transactions may be recorded every month, yet questions remain: Why did gross margin move? Do inventory and Cost of Goods Sold agree with supporting records? Are settlement receivables and clearing accounts explained? Which balances are still waiting for resolution?
Our fractional controller service adds structured accounting review and follow-through, so issues are identified, documented and addressed rather than carried forward unnoticed.
What fractional controller support covers
A focused review and reporting service, tailored to your systems and business complexity.
Monthly close oversight
Review closing schedules, bank and processor reconciliations, journal entries, cutoff matters, material exceptions and the status of unresolved items.
Financial statement analysis
Examine Profit and Loss and Balance Sheet movements, unusual variances, account classifications, and the support behind significant balances.
Inventory and COGS review
Assess inventory rollforwards, purchasing, landed costs and available valuation records; identify gaps affecting gross margin and financial reliability.
Marketplace and clearing controls
Review Amazon, Shopify and payment processor settlement flows, fees, refunds, timing differences and reconciled clearing balances, including legitimate amounts in transit.
Management reporting
Prepare executive-level summaries explaining major changes, operational implications, questions for management, and priorities for follow-up.
Correction tracking and process improvements
Maintain a prioritized issue log, recommend supported corrections, strengthen close checklists and improve repeatable accounting controls.
Work with your existing bookkeeper
You do not need to replace your current bookkeeper or internal finance support. We can provide independent review, monthly reporting oversight, reconciliation follow-up and guidance on issues that require correction.
The division of responsibilities is documented before work begins. GreenTarget may also take on separately scoped accounting maintenance or cleanup where needed.
What you can expect to receive
- Month-end close status and review notes
- Key reconciliation and exception findings
- Accounting issues log with follow-up priorities
- Financial statement review and executive summary
- Inventory or COGS schedules where agreed
Our controller review process
- Assess the current QBO setup, close procedures, reporting and unresolved balances.
- Agree on key accounts, schedules, review responsibilities and reporting deliverables.
- Review monthly reconciliations, financial statements, inventory information and material adjustments.
- Communicate findings, monitor corrective actions and improve the next close.
We review; we do not assume everything is correct
Controller oversight depends on the quality and availability of records. Unsupported figures, incomplete inventory information, and unexplained historical differences are identified and escalated, not presented as verified facts.
Historical cleanup, expanded analysis and special projects are scoped separately when necessary.

Monthly accounting vs. fractional controller
Monthly eCommerce Accounting focuses on maintaining records, reconciling agreed accounts and completing recurring bookkeeping tasks. Fractional Controller Services adds a higher level of review, issue management, control design and management-focused analysis.
Some clients need both. Others already have a bookkeeper and only require the review layer.

What this service does not include
This is fractional controller support, not outsourced CFO leadership, independent audit or assurance, legal counsel, or specialized multistate sales-tax advisory.
Tax filings, major forecasting projects, system migrations and complex entity restructuring require separate scope and qualified specialists where appropriate.
Clear fixed-fee scope
We prefer defined monthly fixed-fee engagements. Pricing depends on the number of entities and channels, condition of the books, inventory complexity, number of accounts to review, required reporting, and existing staff responsibilities.
We agree on deliverables, responsibilities, review cadence and escalation process before beginning.

Frequently asked questions
Can you work with our current bookkeeper?
Yes. We can review the agreed work, document exceptions and help coordinate a reliable monthly close without taking over routine data entry.
Do you prepare budgets and forecasts?
Focused analysis may be included where supported and agreed, but substantial budgeting or forecasting is separately scoped.
Will you reconcile inventory and payment clearing accounts?
We review the supporting schedules and reconciliations included in scope. Clearing balances may remain when settlements are genuinely outstanding. Our goal is an explainable balance supported by source records.
Do we need QuickBooks Online?
QuickBooks Online is our preferred accounting platform, alongside appropriate commerce and settlement integrations.
